  zarco: "Guns Germs and Steel - most thought provoking book I have ever read"

  I worked my way through this on Nvrgnbk's earlier recommendation in this thread.

  I agree. There were quite a few "well duh!" moments in this book for me.

  Father just named an ELDER...party! or not to party!

  i just found out that the named my father an elder in his congregation.

  which i find suprising for many reasons, but thats another story.

  anyway my brothers & sisters invited me to go out to dinner with them and the families, in honor of my fathers new appointment, (2 of my bro are also ms, and had similiar "parties" after appointments).

  Without knowing the parties involved it's hard to say how weird this is, or not.

  Suppose your Dad has been sincerely working on some JW "deficiency" for many years and he finally made it into the club. From what you wrote it sounds like the dinner wasn't even his idea.

  Anyway, I can see how it might feel pretty uncomfortable for you to be there since you don't share their values. If you think your Dad really doesn't qualify then that's just one more reason not to join in.

  Doubting Bro:

  "Does anyone actually use printed calendar's anymore?"

  We still find a printed calendar useful for shared family plans.

  It doesn't get viruses and the hard drive doesn't crash.

  The JW Calendar, of course, DOES have viruses on every page, so it's just hanging up inside a cabinet for the occasional nosy JW relative to see, but we never actually use it.

  Hey, maybe they could show JW parent's being extra creative on Family Worship Night (FWN) by making an igloo or fort out of all the old mags they've got stacked up in the closet.
